I Spy Something Gross

Ooooh! A Reeses wrapper!

Ooooh! A Reeses wrapper!

That is not a rock. Or a black hole. Or a disease eating the city. It is snow…kind of. This is what all the snow looks like downtown at the moment.

If you are in Chicago in the winter, don’t bother using an ashtray, dog scoop, or trash can. It is much easier to throw your garbage in the streets. NO ONE WILL KNOW!! Until the second half of winter. During the downhill freeze, melt, filth cycle all the garbage is revealed. Mayor Daley eventually freaks out and has the whole city scrubbed before the first batch of tourists step onto Michigan Ave. Awe-inspiring floral designs are planted all around the Loop overnight. Everything looks glorious and shiny, thanks to all the money that was made for the City due to parking tickets or selling another piece of the city to a private company. We even have these little sidewalk sweeper machines that are like mini street cleaners. You wouldn’t guess that in February though.

Friends Who Brave the Cold

Daily Picture 012409

Last night–and very early morning– some friends and I celebrated Amber’s Birthday. 9 degrees didn’t stop us from BYOB dinner and then dive bar dancing. Embarrassingly, my muscles are sore from dancing. This means two things. I am out of shape and I don’t get out much this time of year.

One of the topics at dinner was of course the winter blahs. Everyone has been suffering through a particularly harsh winter. The good news is that we are all caught up on LOST, The Wire, or the guilty pleasure of the Twilight books. But this gets old.

We are turning the corner it seems. Just in the last week, as the light is lingering until almost 5 pm (GASP), we have decided to fight back. Haircuts, new clothes, the gym, and plans outside of the couch have been made. We still may have a solid 4 months until a spring day, but we are somehow simultaneously tired of being dominated by the cold, and are willing to bite back. We really are just animals that are very effected by the seasons. Only hibernation is sadly frowned upon.

I lived in Florida for four years before moving to Chicago. You could wake up in October and think it is May, cause there is really not much difference. There are advantages to a season-less climate, although it feels a bit like cheating. The cycle of the year is not a really cycle at all without seasons.

When spring does arrive in Chicago, the sense of community is stronger than any other time of the year. Much like a city that has been hit by disaster, has fought through together, and emerged stronger and more united. Almost. But the idea is that everyone is giddy city-wide. Like we are congratulating ourselves and our neighbors on making it through. Nothing stops Chicagoans from enjoying the warm months with an ecstatic frenzy. Like those puppies that will gorge themselves to death if you keep unlimited food out. I would like to vote to change New Years day to May 1st. It is much more fitting.

Local Foliage

Guess what is growing in Chicago! Stuff that looks like this:

Fresh picked from the corner of Foster and Ashland. Glorious.

I had a haircut this morning at at Sine Qua Non salon with a stylist named Stevie. She was wonderful, and I will be faithful to her. Finally. I am also so happy to have found another Andersonville independently-owned business that I can frequent and be thrilled about.

Next door to the salon is Marguerite Gardens. I would live there if possible. Next time I go I will bring my camera and post the goodness up here. I get all my flowers from this shop, unless I can pick peonies or lilies from my backyard. But it is tragic back there at the moment. I haven’t been in the backyard in months, especially since trash removal is not my thing.

During the spring and summer I always have fresh flowers in the kitchen and entryway. Sadly, I haven’t had flowers since October. This needed to be remedied. In the spirit of crawling out of my winter slump, I stopped into Marguerite and assembled this arrangement for myself. Color like this will not be seen growing outside for another 6 months.

I did this little photoshoot on the back porch, which is still off limits this time of year. Porpus got excited and jumped at the chance to escape. Excuse her squintiness, but she hasn’t seen the sun in months. Porp (aka Norpus) is a Florida kitty and would like nothing more than to roast in a wicker chair in the sun. She’s still out there right now even though it is currently 9 degrees outside. I should check on her.

Chutney is good. Negative 17 is bad.

So this is the third day that Justin’s classes have been cancelled because his school is closed due to dangerous temperatures. I am so jealous. Yesterday, when it was only -10, my breath steamed up into my eyes (the only uncovered part of my body) and then instantly froze to the lashes. Hence, freezing my EYES SHUT. I don’t want to talk about this anymore.

There was some happiness yesterday. I am completely obsessed with cranberries. I have been eating them non-stop for a couple months. I am wondering if there is some vitamin in them that my body is craving during the cold, sunless months. So I mentioned this to my friend Dan, who is also craving the cran. He sent me a cranberry chutney recipe that is delicious! And the ingredients were really pretty. The star of the production was the smell in the house as the chutney cooked down. Can I upload smell yet? It is 2009, and we should have that capability.

So thanks to Dan for the recipe. And also for still being my friend somehow. When we met 11 years ago, we both had purple hair and combat boots. Now I blog about vacuums and recipes.

Here are the pretty berries and the other ingredients in this mix. Too Thanksgivingy? Nah. Is too delicious to eat only one day of the year.

They look almost as happy as summer strawberries...if you squint.

This is Not a Picture of Happiness

I am not going to lie. I am not doing well with the weather. I have always suffered from a seasonal dip in mood and energy during winter, although living in a city during the season is better than living in a smaller town where there are even less options for what to do in the cold. At least we have restaurants galore, trains and a few underground walkways. I know we are on our way to longer days and warmer months, but nice weather still seems very far away.

Here is a screen capture of my weather widget this morning. Do not be fooled by the sunny graphic. And yes, that is a negative sign in front of the 10. Excuse me, but now I have to go fashion a face mask out of an old shirt sleeve. An actual Daily Happiness photo will come later today.

Christmas House and Daily Pictures

We just got back from the Christmas rental house that my mom’s side of the family rented in Michigan city. I am lucky that I didn’t have to travel to 4 different Christmas celebrations like many people have to do these days. It makes for a much more relaxing holiday when you can just wear your pajamas and eat food with your family for a few days. Here are some happiness photos. There is more than one…this is bending the rules slightly. Again, get your own blog.

There is one more photo of a certain gift of a certain special squirrel that will be uploaded soon. His name is Patrick and he has had a long journey. He is resting now and in no mood for a photo shoot. Yes I got a squirrel for Christmas. He is one of a kind though…you will see. Yes, this may happen again. Yes, I have asked you not to do this.

Overall the Christmas house was a success. The hateful pull out couch mattresses a dreadful bruise inducing failure. The puzzle a success. The ice a failure. The gifts a success. The paying off of one’s brother for a better sleeping situation a failure. The walk to the beach a success…unless you were improperly dressed…I of course was properly wrapped in down. The slipping on ice and falling on head a failure. The bienchers* a success.

*This is a dumpling that my grandparents have made for special celebrations or holidays since I can remember. My grandma grew up in China and brought the recipe back over. It is not spelled or pronounced bienchers…but we are mostly hoosiers and can’t help it. You have to roll out the dough, but circles, fill the dough with the meat and veggie filling, pinch closed (called bowing the bienchers), boil them, dip them in soy and vinegar, and eat no less than 50 of them if you are doing it properly. Grandma and Grandpa are passing down the recipe and would like to see more participants in the production of the bienchers. We are slowing catching on. It was fun to see Justin and Jordan rolling out the dough.)

If you look into the green ornament, you can see a blob creature dressed in down. That is me.

This is the best house on the corner of my block. They have an amazing yard in the summer where a lot of neighbors hang out in hammocks and eat watermelon and play with dogs. It is a little too nice. I plan to get to know them and see if they are robots. The front yard is always tastefully decorated and is a really pretty gateway to the rest of the street.

This photo was taken a couple hours before I walked into the basement to find a pipe had burst and water spraying all over. Thanks to Justin’s dad Eric, all was fixed via phone from Handymanville Colorado. Yay!

I am off to pack for Michigan City Christmas house with my mom’s side of the family. Weather is still gross. Roads are bad. I love trains.

Yesterday was the second day of negative temps. It is days like that I can’t believe I live here. The first day of negatives, I didn’t have to leave the house, which was fine with me. Justin got us emergency macaroni and cheese supplies and things were OK. Yesterday was miserable. AND when I got to work, I took off my coat and outer layer of pants but had to leave on the hat, scarf, boots, vest, and GLOVES….grrr. I work inside. In an office. So. The only two things that gets Chicagoans through the winter is eating and talking about summer. Ahh Chicago summers. I just got chills thinking about it…in a good way. So my daily pic of happiness from yesterday is from inside my head. WAIT! That is cheating! No it’s not. This is my blog. Get your own.

Here is my backyard on a lovely day in the summer. It kept me warm yesterday:

summer!

Today it averaged -3 degrees during the day. This calls for hibernation.

Under Consideration

I am very serious about staying warm. I recently purchased the best blanket in the world from Target. It is the most fantastic thing to happen to me (warmth wise) since the puffy coat purchase. It may have taken me 4 Chicago winters to realize this, but I am now facing the brutality of the season head on and looking ridiculous in the process. As I am curled up in my best blanket in the world, my friend sends a link that makes me seriously consider adding another fine piece to my increasingly embarrassing winter arsenal. Behold the Slanket!
