Six Day Weekends? Yes. Please.

Are you one of those people who have never been to Lake Michigan? Just so you know, it isn’t really a lake/pond. There are waves, beaches, and you can’t see the other side. If you have been to a “sea” or a “gulf” then you should expect something more along those lines when you go to the Great Lakes.

I grew up fairly close to Lake Michigan. So I didn’t give it much thought and just assumed that it was normal to live in the middle of the U.S. and have access to thousands of miles of coastline. Not so much. Just think of Iowa for a second…

…did you just fall asleep and then wake up with keyboard marks on your face?

It is because Iowa has no beach.

However, Michigan does. See:

So if you have never been there, and you don’t already live on the coast, I would highly recommend a visit to the Great Lakes. Stay in Michigan. Spend some of your money there. They can use it these days.

My family rented a house with a view of the lake for labor day. It was a three generation gathering, so that meant that we all make and eat these:

Here they are all lined up and ready to be boiled. I can't spell the name of them, but we call them "Bien-churs"

Most of the my time was spent lounging around and walking the beach or giving photography and Photoshop lessons to my brother, who has a ridiculously nice Canon. Some more ambitious family members went for runs and multi-mile bike rides. Others gained 4 lbs over the weekend. All in my face. Here are a few more captures of the most relaxing 6-day-weekend I have ever had: (full set here)

Oh Dear

Disapproving Squirrel is so pissed off.

Disapproving Squirrel is so pissed off.

I found Curious Bun for about 2 bucks at an antique shop on our trip. I thought it might be good for Squirrel’s attitude to have someone around with a healthy curiosity. But he is more jaded than ever and dangerously irritated with his new companion. He is in time-out and will not be allowed on the blog for some time.

I took today off even though we returned home yesterday. I am not sure if I mentioned this new rule before, but I am really loving it. If you have the luxury of paid vacation days and very little responsibility to anything besides two fat felines…I suggest trying out the transitional-day-back-to-normal-life-method. Knowing that you have a day at home to get things in order, before being thrust into your normal routine again, makes the last day of your actual trip nearly stress-free.

I spent my last day off slowing easing back onto the internet. I was slightly horrified to see that I had over 50 emails that weren’t even spam and 297 posts to read on my Google Reader. *MARK ALL AS READ.* Whew. I think this is a sign that I am on the computer WAY too much.

One of the emails waiting in line to be read was a really awesome DNH link from my mom that is worth watching: Duckling Rescue. Enjoy!

The Best

Why I waited so long to plan a vacation for Justin and I is beyond me. The long weekend was a success and we are trying to weasel in some more getaways this summer. They may well be in a tent rather than an inn, but I am excited for more adventures none-the-less.

So everyone always asks “How was your trip?” I really can’t imagine they want to hear about it at length, but here goes:

The best parts of the Door County trip:

  • The Blacksmith Inn. This place was so relaxing and beautiful. They had fresh cookies in the common room, hammocks on the balconies, fireplaces and in-room hot tubs. I would go back in a second. The owners were sweet and had breakfast waiting every morning. Each room is different, so take your pick.
  • Fried Cheese Curds. I don’t need to explain why this is awesome.
  • Fried Lake Perch. See also: Blue Gill.
  • Restaurant Saveur. Order the calamari steak. Ridiculous.
  • Wild Tomato. Such a great lunch. Featuring wood-fired pizza and artwork done by the owner’s children.
  • Thrift Store in Egg Harbor…or Fish Creek. We scored golf clubs, a bowling bag/new purse, and Trivial Pursuit from the late 80′s or early 90′s. We are now experts on the U.S.S.R. and the six-year-war.
  • Selfishly hogging Justin to myself. Undivided attention is the best birthday present.
  • Mama Bird. There was this little sandpiper nesting right next to the doc. We checked in on her a lot and had several quality conversations with her, regarding her muffin-like stance on her nest. A rival mama bird in the area did a weird feather dance that we can only imagine is called “splaying.”
  • Nature.
  • Not involving airports in any way. There is something to be said for road-trips making a vacation less stressful.

I Should Be Packing

I haven’t posted much happiness in the last couple days because I have been crazy busy at work. Like fall-asleep-at-the-computer-just-before-midnight-the-wake-up-at-5:30-am-and-have-work-for-breakfast-busy. Sprinkle in finals week to that mix and you have zombie-brained Boleys. Unless you are Porpus Boley, in that case you just hang out in boxes and bite your toenails in-between snacks.

So this little Door County vacation comes at a great time. We will be packing up and leaving this morning. Disapproving Squirrel is being put in charge. He doesn’t like this one bit.

He is clearly irritated about being left alone with Schween.

I threw out all the fresh flowers that would have gone rotten over the weekend and was thrilled to see this orchid is going strong. I don't know what it is, but I imagine it will last for weeks. I am a big fan.

Oh yeah, it is my birthday on Saturday! My momma sent me my first card. I love it.

I am off to pack now. I will return with many photos of the county. Ciao!

P.S. WATCH THIS. LOVE THIS.

Two Days To Go

Justin is taking finals for two more days and then we are going on a vacation.

I have mentioned this before, but this is the first time we will have gone on a trip alone in our 6 years together. No visiting family–although we love family (hi and hello, family). No visiting friends. Just a regular vacation. I hear this is a good thing. I get a burst of excitement every time I look at the place we are staying. Happy birthday to me!

Now we just need to get through the next two days. Luckily, I have been working on a new project at work with a team I don’t normally work with. So I am having fun and staying busy which always makes the time fly. I would take a picture of what I am doing as my DPH, but then I would have to kill you. So here are some of Porpus in a blanket cave and on the coffee table instead.

I had forgotten how delicious long-exposure with a side of flash is. I will be exploring this more...although it makes the subject of the photo appear drunk 99% of the time.

Smells Like Happy

*Sniff*...ahhhh

*Sniff*...ahhhh

My kitchen smells so flippin good. These lilies are stinking up half of the house. In a good way. Their aroma is leaking into the dining room, two rooms away. They are sitting pretty on the kitchen counter and the only thing that would make them better is if they were Stargazer lilies. I can forgive them.

Justin is basically gone for 3 days…with the exception of sleeping here…I think? There’s a group of his buddies in town for one of the last bachelor parties of the crew. I clearly want nothing to do with it. (He will not be around to help with my typos–Ryan please advise.)

So I am sniffing lilies and talking to myself/cats. It isn’t half bad. And I am really looking forward to the clothing exchange, margaritas and delicious Ruark food that I will be sharing with a bunch of rad ladies this weekend! Not only will it make me clean out my entire closet and both dressers, but it is a very *recession* friendly idea. (First and last time I use *that word* on Megagood…unless I am laid off of course. The internet doesn’t need another site talking about it. I’m not ignorant of what is going on.. I just don’t want to write about it on here. We get it.)

The real excitement of the day was hard to capture in a photo. It is hopefully the subject of many future DPH photos, but it is yet to be confirmed. I am planning my first vacation alone with Justin! Yeah, this is year 3 of our marriage and the 6th year of our relationship. Yes, of course we have been on vacations and trips together. A lot of really great ones. BUT…it was all to visit family or friends. NEVER…(there was no honeymoon) have we gone on a trip together as a couple. This has to stop. By the time I turn 26. Which is coming up in May.

After a lot of research on places to stay in Door County, Wisconsin, I think I found it. Blacksmith Inn on the Shore. If you know of anything better up there, please let me know. Justin doesn’t know about this yet. But he will surely be on board. I think there are some wineries to visit.

Hopefully I can upload some good DPH after our trip that looks like this…(only more macro I am sure):

Anticipation

I don’t have to go to work tomorrow, so that means I am in charge of the whole day.

Today, I have spent a lot of time being excited about this day off tomorrow. This happens to me all the time. This “looking forward” to something makes today just as exciting, if not more. Tomorrow is idealized in my head. I have a grand list of things I want to do. And tonight they all seem possible.

However, tomorrow I will inevitably start thinking about the work week, and the excitement of my day off will be a bit tarnished. Why does this happen? I just want to fully enjoy my time in the moment. Why can’t I just live more presently? The last day of an extended vacation is always a bittersweet too. I certainly don’t feel alone in this irritating human quality. Bah!!

BUT today is fantastic because my mind is filled with the endless possibilities of tomorrow. I’m thrilled to be sitting in bed right now with the alarm set for 6:30, plotting the activities that will follow the morning coffee. I plan to document the day and enjoy it, find happiness in being in charge of myself, and not worry about it all coming to an end without my list being completely accomplished.

In the spirit of anticipation, and my love for looking forward to things, I actually looked into the past. My old photo albums (pre-Canon and pre-DPH photos) document hundreds of happy moments that I can remember looking forward to during the days that led up to the happenings, enjoying them as they occurred, and certainly didn’t ruin them by realizing the day(s) would come to an end. Documenting and revisiting them remind me that I have more of these moments to come. Thus completing the cycle and sending me off into a state of anticipated happiness all over again.

Tune in tomorrow to see how it goes.

Year of the Pajama

I took a vacation not only from work, but from any kind of life in general for the last few days.

My in-laws came to visit for a few days and we ate a lot of good food and had some fun and relaxing times. We also saw The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. It was fantastic and amazing and you have to go immediately. Mercutio the dog came along as well. Not the movie…just along on the trip.  Needless to say, this was not a relaxing visit for our cats, although they weren’t as utterly terrified as I expected. Luckily Merc is a very good boy.

So after Eric and Donna and Merc’s visit, we decided to further test this “relaxation” theory and pretty much do nothing. It was fantastic, although I am kind of looking forward to life again. Today I left the house! Whoa. Granted it was in my pjs, but thanks to my long puffy coat, no one knew. Except now the Internet does I suppose. You can judge me from afar which I am much more comfortable with. This all may sound pathetic, but I actually feel more lucky than homeless. There are few times in life when you can watch the Netflix instant movies for hours and hours without being fired or unemployed. I will have great practice if I am part of any layoffs this year. Yippee skippy!

So as my vacation comes to a close, I have been thinking about real life again. There are some things that I want to work on this year. Hopefully, I can read this post in a year (from my couch in my pajamas) and be satisfied that I actually did something (besides watching nearly all the episodes of The Office and 30Rock in record time from my laptop. I <3 the Netflix Watch Instantly feature by the way).

Things to do in 2009:

  • Go to the gym regularly again (very original, yes).
  • Not use as much butter. (I just read this sentence again while reviewing the list and am disturbed by the choice of the word “use”)
  • Read more…I was reading books like crazy until the weather changed…then mostly ate food and sat on the computer. Maybe I can substitute books for butter on occasion. Paula Deen would be pissed.
  • Paint the paintings I have been thinking about for about 6 months already.
  • Go on more dates. (With husband).
  • Go on a trip as a couple only. We have never done this. This one may not be in the budget but I want to keep it on the list. Maybe we can start with just a weekend getaway. Glorious Gary Indiana is nearby.
  • Work on children’s book.
  • Learn to live in a cube for 8 hours a day.
  • Take down Christmas tree. Before Valentines day.

In other news, our cats are now being referred to as Sytherin and Gryffindor. Justin and I are not really big Harry Potter fans (I just had to google Sytherin and Gryffindor for proper spelling), but this is what happens when you spend many many hours speaking nonsense to one another. I am glad no one can hear us. They would be concerned I think.
