Home Tour!

I was lucky to have the day off today and decided to use the camera before it officially dies. The macro setting was working, so I decided to tour around and capture some of the textures and patterns of my house.

I didn’t realize I had such a variety of pattern until the end of this little project. It turned out very happy. Seeing some of this up close made me realize I need to dust and that puppies from upstairs can do a number on entry way floors. There may also be a lot of cat hair in this. The Dyson is coming out again. Bonus points awarded if you can spot an annoyed husband, a custom Amy Batule coaster, and no less than ten IKEA items. Enjoy!

Another lamp in the living room

Here is another corner of the living room that is glowing with another member of the lamp family. It has a really soft glow that doesn’t burn my retinas. Happy happy.

Below that is a pile of chap sticks that I found around my house. There are a few missing from this collection. Probably another two at the gym and a couple in different coat pockets. Before I had this collection, I tried to keep just one chap stick that was with me at all times. This doesn’t work. Inevitably I found myself without it and then I can’t think about anything but finding more chap stick. It is a debilitating addiction. During a photo shoot about a year ago, I fashioned a bracelet made out of duct tape. The jewel was a jar of Lip Medex. Much like a hideous watch. But as I was running around the studio, I had it attached conveniently to my body at all times.

This is the corner in my living room that I find myself staring at every day. Often without realizing it. Just one of those comfortable stares, where you can’t take your eyes away cause they are so cozy and not really interested in moving on. Much like not wanting to get out of the warm cozy bed with memory foam mattress, down comforter and soft sheets early on a January morning. To walk in the cold. To go to spin class while it is still dark.

I just got home from a long night at work, but I would feel neglectful to yesterday’s happy photo if I went to bed without posting the poor little guy. This corner features one of the floor lamps that I was talking about here. It’s friends are two floor vases that I bought at one of my favorite local spots, Andersonville Galleria. It is basically a larger store that many different local Chicago artists and merchants rent space within. There are about 20 little “booths” or “nooks” within the store. It allows smaller merchants to sell in a high rent neighborhood which is great.

Sometimes I bring my old lady/homeless city cart in there. I am sure they are a bit annoyed. But not as annoyed at the people that endured my “lets take the Christmas tree on the Clark bus” ride.

I love mirrors. And gollllllld. This is pretty clear if you come to my house.

Kitchen mirrors

These make me very happy. I have never had many things hanging on my walls and I can’t commit to anything but mirrors right now. Growing up, there was never much on the walls of those houses either. Maybe because we moved every three years? Not sure. Sometime I would like to have art as well, but I am taking baby steps at the moment and am pleased with those results.

Mirrors make the space feel larger, add interest to a blank wall, and reflect light. I also have issues committing to a lot of different colors in a living space because it easily feels cluttered to me. Mirrors will not add another color, but will reflect the existing space, so you can always be sure they “match” the room. I would rather mix different textures of similar hues than coordinate a lot of patterns or color schemes. My living room colors come from the wood floors and trim, brick accent wall, and sage green couch. The rest of the decor is either soft white or a light source.

Speaking of light sources, lamps are key to any room. I have a mix of 5 floor or table lamps around the living room because I detest overhead light unless I am cooking in the kitchen. I have turned on the overhead light in the living room maybe once to find a lost earring. As far as I am concerned it should be used only in emergencies. Nothing changes the mood of a space more than lighting. I beg of you not to make me sit under an overhead light. I will actually scream if it is a fluorescent overhead.

This is the number one reason I don’t ever want to go to prison. I am sure they do not allow floor lamps or reading lamps in the cells. I would probably try and get my hands on some flashlights through a series of strategic trades and would then make lamps out of them with a pillowcase and some mashed potatoes that I smuggled back to the cell from the cafeteria. I am pretty resourceful. So now that I think about it, my cell would probably have great lighting after a month or so. So please exercise your freedoms and rights to purchase cheap light sources from IKEA or Target, and buy a lamp or two. Or I will stab my eyes out if I have to visit you.

Have a great day!
