Juice

I woke up with a headache. Now it is gone thanks to Ryan's gift of fresh squeezed juice. I think it is carrot, mango, ginger, orange. Jamba has nothing on this stuff. I shall call it Ryamba.

He also brought over some peeps. Ehhhh. I don't trust them. Neither does mini-squirrel.

Last night I attended the Campfire Ball kick-off hosted at Kiehls on Armitage. There were cocktails, mini cupcakes by Swirlz, raffles, and discounts. A portion of the sales went to support the One Step At a Time Camps for kids with cancer. The main event will be on April 18th at N9ne steakhouse and Ghostbar. You should get tickets!

It was fun to practice my event photography skills again last night (Thanks, Rachel). Now I have a million photos to go through, but it is all fun to me. Here are some of the shots from last night:

Strawberry-Filled Lemon Cakes

I admit to my total obsession with lemons. I probably use hundreds a year. “Lemon tree” should be added to the list of trees growing in my imaginary backyard.

I was inspired to bake this weekend when I saw a recipe for these cupcakes. They seemed too wintery for April, but I still wanted to do a filled cupcake. In hindsight…the Irish car-bomb cupcakes would have fit right in with the RAIN/ICE/SLEET (update: SNOW) today…the weather is officially being put on notice.

Megagood Strawberry-Filled Lemon Cakes

  1. Steal someone’s recipe and make it my own: Lemon Cream Cupcakesingredients_4up
  2. Here is my addition:

When you spoon the batter into the cupcake papers, add a teaspoon of spreadable fruit as a second layer. Then cover that up with one more spoonful of batter. Magic! You have a strawberry filled cupcake. I learned that the batter for the cupcakes is very thick. Putting the dollop of the fruit on top of the batter so that it sinks in during baking doesn’t work. You have to layer it manually. Otherwise they will look like this:round_one1Oops. I can see the strawberry insides. Where is the fun surprise factor? You want them to come out of the oven looking like this:

The fresh strawberries are a delicious pop of color that tops-off each cupcake. They are megatasty.

Giant Cat Smothers Man

Friday night at the Boley house:

Justin lived through that somehow. He has become immune to being smothered by felines through repeated exposures. He has developed impressive feline anti-bodies, and a talent for cat herding.

The night consisted of a sushi picnic on the couch. I am so glad we live 1056 feet from the nearest sushi take-out place. All the signage is charmingly misspelled, and the atmosphere is better for take-out than dine-in. But it satisfies Miso soup cravings, and that is all I really care about. Combined with the soy sauce that was consumed, our sodium levels surely have reached an all-time high.

Looks gross. Tastes great.

I also realized that yesterday was Megagood’s two-month blog anniversary. It seems like a LOT longer than that, but I guess I do update this thing quite a bit. It has been unexpectedly rewarding, and I plan to keep it up. Thanks for reading…whoever you are. Porpus celebrated the occasion with a festive cupcake hat. I had to remind her that cupcakes are for eating. This rule should not be abused.

Take that off right now.

Wonderwall

I don’t have a cube at work. I have never worked in a cube. I am about to move into one in the near future.

What does this mean for me? No more window overlooking the Chicago river for one. My plan is to make the best of it and treat it like a tiny apartment that I would like to hang out in rather than hang myself in. This means immediately blocking out any overhead light. Filling the space with proper lighting. And covering up the blocks that build the cube with something. Can I build a roof? How many CB2, West elm, and Etsy packages is the mail room willing to deliver me at work? Can Porpus come?

Though I have to share my current office space, it is pretty much the size of my first Chicago apartment. We have a corner view and a door. And walls that go up to the ceiling! Sometimes there are meetings in there, which is the only major complaint for me. My roommates are spectacular and have no ogre habits or desk drumming skills to note. They have excellent taste in music, and are willing to entertain experimental lighting ideas. I will miss their daily company.

In my little corner of the room, I have my wall of happy. I enjoy it daily, and it is fun to look at while I wait for Illustrator to crash or the server to freak out and take 10 years to open a 2k image. Not sure if the whole wonderwall will travel with me to the future cube, but I will definitely be taking Deery Lou’s Champagne fantasy and the angry white kitty.
