Strawberry Hats

I think I am a day behind. On life and on the DPH’s. Our internet and cable were out this morning because the weather in Chicago is abominable. Since the beginning of June, I have been throughly disgusted with the weather that is generally gorgeous this time of year. At this point, moving seems like a grand idea. But I have an abusive relationship with the city, and will take another beating from it’s cold angry fists and keep on ticking. I am giving it five more days, and then I will go completely nuts and possibly go on a hunger strike or take up a new hobby like hibernation. Not that Chicago will care.

I shouldn’t kid myself about the hunger strike. Clearly, I love food. In the last two days, I have eating a full pound of strawberries after dinner each night. I can’t get enough. We have a pint of gourmet berry sorbet in the house, but it tastes like frozen cardboard compared to the fresh berries. And, I haven’t actually eaten anything really bad for me in over two weeks. I am fairly impressed.

Curious Bun was curious about all the strawberries, and wanted to be involved somehow. Since her mouth is much too small to eat a big berry, she fashioned a lovely hat for herself and had some shots taken.

And here is a random photo that I have from my commute this week. The sun actually made an appearance! Woot! Although it makes me sad when plants start losing their blossoms, it does make for a luxurious carpet of vibrant petals to walk on. Brides pay good money for this kind of treatment.

Only Happy When It Rains…

…at night. The sound of a rainstorm against the windows at night is such a calming and peaceful noise to fall asleep to. I don’t mind a storm at night one bit, unless I am driving or there are tornadoes involved. But I don’t drive, and tornadoes don’t seem to like Lake Michigan very much so I am pretty safe. Last night’s downpour was such a comforting sound, but only because I was warm and cozy indoors eating pasta and cheese. The baseball fans at the Cubs game were probably on a different page.

This is the window to the front yard this morning. I could have taken it for last night, but you would not have been able to see much since my night skills are lacking

The rainstorm would have been even better if I woke up to a sunny morning full of happy. well-fed plants, but it will likely be an umbrella and wellies kind of day again. Let me just pretend for a second that it was a sunny morning and show you what that may have looked like. It is my blog and I can do what I want.

Good morning broad summer leaves! Look how you and the sunshine are dappling the sidewalk below. Well done.

Morning, Dr. Suess-puff-ball-purple-flowers!

Tiny Bun! Good to see you. I hope you were underground and cozy last night in your lot on Carmen and Ashland. It would be great if you could have some tiny bun bun babies. That would be maximum cuteness. Thanks.

I hope you enjoyed that fake walk with me.

More random happy happenings yesterday:

  1. It was my mom’s birthday! She just joined Facebook a couple days ago, which means she is actually a lot younger than her real age. Bravo.
  2. I got two tickets to see UP in 3-d this Saturday! I will likely be sharing the theater with all the kids in Evanston, but I am thrilled regardless.
  3. I downloaded the Couch to 5k plan for myself and made a workout calendar that starts next Monday. I am working on my music play-list with the help of Facebook friends, and acquiring some decent running shoes in the meantime. Woot! I have also been inspired by Jo to start eating better. I am going to attempt moderation, which I have never been very good at.

Oh Dear

Disapproving Squirrel is so pissed off.

Disapproving Squirrel is so pissed off.

I found Curious Bun for about 2 bucks at an antique shop on our trip. I thought it might be good for Squirrel’s attitude to have someone around with a healthy curiosity. But he is more jaded than ever and dangerously irritated with his new companion. He is in time-out and will not be allowed on the blog for some time.

I took today off even though we returned home yesterday. I am not sure if I mentioned this new rule before, but I am really loving it. If you have the luxury of paid vacation days and very little responsibility to anything besides two fat felines…I suggest trying out the transitional-day-back-to-normal-life-method. Knowing that you have a day at home to get things in order, before being thrust into your normal routine again, makes the last day of your actual trip nearly stress-free.

I spent my last day off slowing easing back onto the internet. I was slightly horrified to see that I had over 50 emails that weren’t even spam and 297 posts to read on my Google Reader. *MARK ALL AS READ.* Whew. I think this is a sign that I am on the computer WAY too much.

One of the emails waiting in line to be read was a really awesome DNH link from my mom that is worth watching: Duckling Rescue. Enjoy!

Peanuts and Bun Buns

I felt like I woke up on the wrong side of the bed yesterday. The whole day was kind of an off-day. When I woke up this morning I got out of bed to turn the alarm off and then walked directly into the wall. So my hopes of waking up on the right side of the bed were quickly dashed. The weather is promising to be sunny and near 70 today, so I am willing to give today a chance. Lunch outside on the grassy knoll by the Chicago River with a sandwich from Pastoral is in order.

When I got home yesterday, a HUGE box from the Specialty Bottle company was waiting for me. My 20lbs of spice jars finally arrived. They brought with them some unwanted guests.

:(

:(

I hate packing peanuts. I don’t like reaching into them and having them stick to me. They are all over the floor, they are styrofoam—which is quite hateful all on it’s own—and they make terrible squeaky noises when they rub against each other. The sound makes my back teeth hurt. Their only redeeming quality is by association. They mean that a package came in the mail and they are protecting the goodies beneath.

I think I may have gone overboard. My spices should be set for life though.

The Dyson will eating little green styro-bits as snacks for no less than three weeks. But I guess none of the jars were harmed on their journey across the US, so I shouldn’t complain.

While uploading a picture of empty spice jars, I started to giggle maniacally as I thought of my Blog Stats hit-counter graph plummeting with this post.
