Let Them Eat Cake

I have so much I want to write about that I am going to have to just start posting more. I can’t beat myself up every time I don’t have photos to go with the post.

I hope you don’t beat me up either. Think of the unborn baby.

But look here! I do actually have some photos today.

We had a slumber party on Sunday. Minus the slumber. The girls hung out during the day, watched bad movies/TV, ate cake, ate cake, ate cake, painted nails, read magazines. Really girly slumber-party-ish activities were had by all. We celebrated Amber’s birthday and we all watched her blow out the candles in our pajamas. This is the only time you will ever see her in a Piston’s sweatshirt. Guaranteed.

I don’t have many pictures of the lovely attendees, because it is a pajama party. And honestly, the cakes are way prettier than our sweatpants and headbands. At least in my case. My latest fashion, while walking around the house, is a pair of faded yoga pants covered in cat hair with the elastic cut out of the front of them to accomodate my belly. I am looking SO good in those. Nope.

Speaking of growing bellies, I have wanted to start a maternity photo series, but I haven’t figured out how to do it yet. The pie in the sky photos would be something as great as the two series here and here from Pacing the Panic room. Nothing else I have found is very inspiring or original. My goal is to have something whipped up in the next couple weeks before I start to get really huge. Wish me luck!

Only Happy When It Rains…

…at night. The sound of a rainstorm against the windows at night is such a calming and peaceful noise to fall asleep to. I don’t mind a storm at night one bit, unless I am driving or there are tornadoes involved. But I don’t drive, and tornadoes don’t seem to like Lake Michigan very much so I am pretty safe. Last night’s downpour was such a comforting sound, but only because I was warm and cozy indoors eating pasta and cheese. The baseball fans at the Cubs game were probably on a different page.

This is the window to the front yard this morning. I could have taken it for last night, but you would not have been able to see much since my night skills are lacking

The rainstorm would have been even better if I woke up to a sunny morning full of happy. well-fed plants, but it will likely be an umbrella and wellies kind of day again. Let me just pretend for a second that it was a sunny morning and show you what that may have looked like. It is my blog and I can do what I want.

Good morning broad summer leaves! Look how you and the sunshine are dappling the sidewalk below. Well done.

Tiny Bun! Good to see you. I hope you were underground and cozy last night in your lot on Carmen and Ashland. It would be great if you could have some tiny bun bun babies. That would be maximum cuteness. Thanks.

I hope you enjoyed that fake walk with me.

More random happy happenings yesterday:

  1. It was my mom’s birthday! She just joined Facebook a couple days ago, which means she is actually a lot younger than her real age. Bravo.
  2. I got two tickets to see UP in 3-d this Saturday! I will likely be sharing the theater with all the kids in Evanston, but I am thrilled regardless.
  3. I downloaded the Couch to 5k plan for myself and made a workout calendar that starts next Monday. I am working on my music play-list with the help of Facebook friends, and acquiring some decent running shoes in the meantime. Woot! I have also been inspired by Jo to start eating better. I am going to attempt moderation, which I have never been very good at.

A Liar’s Birthday

I have had quite the birthday month. My real birthday was spent with Justin on a relaxing vacation, and my “friend” birthday was celebrated this weekend at the Liar’s Club. There is nothing “Club” about that place. That is why I like it. It is a major dive bar that plays really good and really cheesy music that is good for dancing. The dancing…again, no one really  cares. Much interpretive dance was performed on Saturday. Here are a couple shots from the song Sure Shot by the Beastie Boys:

I am not sure what Justin and I are doing here, but Drea is playing a lovely flute to the beat of the song.

And here is my version of the famous Beastie Boys air flute. Ryan is the only one who saved face in this shot. Well played, sir.

Before we went to the Liar’s Club, we ate at a little place called Lincoln Park Noodle house, which is really the only restaurant near there. The food is always good, and the service is OK if you are the only table there. It was slow that night so we were treated well.

What really made my night was how incredibly thoughtful my birthday gifts were. It made me so happy that I have a group of friends that know me so well. *tear*

I have never recieved so many dead-on gifts at one time. Yay for awesome friends.

The Best

Why I waited so long to plan a vacation for Justin and I is beyond me. The long weekend was a success and we are trying to weasel in some more getaways this summer. They may well be in a tent rather than an inn, but I am excited for more adventures none-the-less.

So everyone always asks “How was your trip?” I really can’t imagine they want to hear about it at length, but here goes:

The best parts of the Door County trip:

  • The Blacksmith Inn. This place was so relaxing and beautiful. They had fresh cookies in the common room, hammocks on the balconies, fireplaces and in-room hot tubs. I would go back in a second. The owners were sweet and had breakfast waiting every morning. Each room is different, so take your pick.
  • Fried Cheese Curds. I don’t need to explain why this is awesome.
  • Fried Lake Perch. See also: Blue Gill.
  • Restaurant Saveur. Order the calamari steak. Ridiculous.
  • Wild Tomato. Such a great lunch. Featuring wood-fired pizza and artwork done by the owner’s children.
  • Thrift Store in Egg Harbor…or Fish Creek. We scored golf clubs, a bowling bag/new purse, and Trivial Pursuit from the late 80′s or early 90′s. We are now experts on the U.S.S.R. and the six-year-war.
  • Selfishly hogging Justin to myself. Undivided attention is the best birthday present.
  • Mama Bird. There was this little sandpiper nesting right next to the doc. We checked in on her a lot and had several quality conversations with her, regarding her muffin-like stance on her nest. A rival mama bird in the area did a weird feather dance that we can only imagine is called “splaying.”
  • Nature.
  • Not involving airports in any way. There is something to be said for road-trips making a vacation less stressful.

I Should Be Packing

I haven’t posted much happiness in the last couple days because I have been crazy busy at work. Like fall-asleep-at-the-computer-just-before-midnight-the-wake-up-at-5:30-am-and-have-work-for-breakfast-busy. Sprinkle in finals week to that mix and you have zombie-brained Boleys. Unless you are Porpus Boley, in that case you just hang out in boxes and bite your toenails in-between snacks.

So this little Door County vacation comes at a great time. We will be packing up and leaving this morning. Disapproving Squirrel is being put in charge. He doesn’t like this one bit.

He is clearly irritated about being left alone with Schween.

I threw out all the fresh flowers that would have gone rotten over the weekend and was thrilled to see this orchid is going strong. I don't know what it is, but I imagine it will last for weeks. I am a big fan.

Oh yeah, it is my birthday on Saturday! My momma sent me my first card. I love it.

I am off to pack now. I will return with many photos of the county. Ciao!

P.S. WATCH THIS. LOVE THIS.

Happiness Catch-Up

I am about to leave my mom’s condo in Kalamazoo, when she opens up Megagood just to check for updates and reminds me I am behind. Well, yes, but I had clearly been visiting the family all weekend and there are no magical blog elves that posted in my absence. Elves are also notoriously bad at cropping photos.

Friday night began with wine at happy hour and then running to the Metra again. Why? This is an important lesson that needs learning. The happy hour had a cast of characters that was a mix of old-world and new-world, and I think I may have missed the majority of the good time from what facebook is telling me. And there is some kind of inside joke about 4-h camp that I am totally clueless about. Anyway, duty called and laundry and packing was to be done.

Justin and I rode the Amtrak to Kalamazoo and it arrived…early? This never ever happens. Amtrak shares tracks with freight lines, and that is just an awful system, so we generally anticipate some delay. We arrived in Kalamazoo with plenty of daylight left and time to grocery shop for the Sunday birthday dinner. I planned to make the Italian Sausage(fake for vegetarians) and Tortellini soup of course.

Saturday night, we headed over to my brother’s fabulous apt, which is the finest in Kalamazoo. Guaranteed. Better/more photos would have been captured if I’d known that rushing to dinner at the restaurant Mangia Mangia was totally pointless. We were starving upon arrival and then RAVENOUS upon being seated. The wait was grossly underestimated and the hostesses narrowly avoided being eaten. Yes, I’ve been reading a lot of vampire books. Yes, it seemed like a perfectly logical solution to the hunger.

“Mangia Mangia” is excellent fun to say, and slightly less fun as a restaurant. But besides the wait, it was a pretty good meal. The bottle of Malbec was possibly the highlight, and did wonders to calm our mood and boost the blood sugar. We were also introduced to the incredible Strandbeests at dinner via the ever amazing iPhone that Jordan proudly owns. No, I don’t have one yet. I am practicing patience.

Sunday was the birthday dinner for Jordan(23), Justin(28), and Grandpa Jim(87!). My uncle, Craig(28?), also has a birthday in February, but sadly, he is a plane ride away and couldn’t make it. It is clearly the popular month for male birthdays in my family. The meal was delicious, but spicy according to certain Hoosier taste buds. Sorry about that. I tried to tone it down. However, no one took any issue with the layered raspberry Boonzaaijer Bakery cake.

After dinner Grandma and Grandpa were trained on their first cell phone. Hopefully, at 87-years-old I will also be able to embrace new technology that might make my life better. I am a little worried about this, as I cannot properly use the remote to my TV. Let me please have patient grandchildren. Or a patient 85-year-old little brother who will still be hip. It is likely.
